Down in Chinatown
Unveil the hidden charms of the authentic chinese district
Saigon’s current incarnation as a hive of trade and cultural mixture is nothing new: this photographic wander through the city’s historic Chinatown reveals Buddhist pagodas, former French school and street markets selling everything you can imagine. The home of Saigon’s once-large ethnic Chinese community, ‘Chợ Lớn’ still bears traces of this history, with plenty of Mandarin signage, dim sum stalls and an assembly hall built by immigrants from the north. While navigating this bustling labyrinth of backstreets and temples, you’ll work on a variety of street photography techniques, and put together a series exploring daily life in Saigon’s atmospheric Chinatown.

The best camera is the one you already own! Any cameras being DSLR, hybrids, compacts and even smartphones are welcome as the tours are truly about composition and creativity. In terms of lenses, bring a prime lens (35 or 50mm) if you have and a standard zoom lens. You also need one or two fully-charged batteries and enough memory cards to go through the day. Besides camera gear, make sure you wear light, hot weather appropriate clothing and closed shoes for optimal comfort.

As a general rule the rain never lasts long in Saigon, then either we will go under cover to continue to photograph or have a drink to review pictures and talk photography.

I will also stay in touch after the tour to give you feedback on your photos and provide you with education tools to go further. I see myself as a facilitator who will support your learning process and help you to empower yourself in your journey through the lens.

We will briefly discuss the technical side (exposure triangle, ways to focus, how to set your camera…) so that settings don’t get in the way of your photography. I will tell you about my vision of photography and what makes a great street photograph in my opinion. During the tour, I will also explain how to approach people in an appropriate way to capture more intimate and expressive photographs. We will focus on effective ways to tell impactful visual stories and work a scene through different techniques such as creative use of light, art of matching colors, use of perspectives and leading lines, sub-framing, and more.
